Who are Sociopaths among us?  How do we identify them?

Ordinary sociopaths are not to be confused with wild-eyed Hollywood portrayals of maniacal psychopaths.  Quite the contrary is true of Sociopaths, who some professionals consider to be a subset of Narcissism. Definitions for Sociopaths are found in a book I've recommended many times, by Dr Martha Stout:  The Sociopath Next Door - 1 in 25 ordinary Americans secretly has no conscience and can do anything at all without feeling guilty.  



Here are 2 clear markers for Sociopaths, discoverable in their behavior patterns:  1) Sociopaths have no conscience.  Hence, 2) Sociopaths cannot feel guilt nor remorse, like the rest of us ordinary people can.



Successful Sociopaths are almost invisible, because they learn how to hide their lack of conscience so well as they gravitate to positions of power and control, like a moth drawn to a flame, such as becoming heads of organizations, corporate CEOs, elected officials, husbands, wives, lawyers or judges.

Because a Sociopath has no conscience, it cannot feel guilt, nor remorse, like the other 96% of us can.  Successful Sociopaths recognize early on their deficiency, and study us intently to learn how to imitate what they cannot feel.  And/or they gravitate toward professions where conscience and remorse are handicaps to their success, such as CEOs of fascist legal fictions we call Corporations. But a Sociopath just might be the person who sleeps next to you.

George Bush and Dick Cheney are certifiable Sociopaths.  They have never felt the least remorse nor responsibility for the millions they've murdered with their lies.  Most elected Republicans, affectionately known as Rethuglicans, are Sociopaths.

Sociopaths retreat to auto-response defense behavior whenever they sense that they are close to being exposed, to divert attention away from themselves.  The most common trick– and the one which is a key identifier – is their ability to play for pity. They know, at a visceral level, that – if they can spin initial uncertainty into pity – ordinary people cannot simultaneously feel anger toward someone they pity.  Playing the Pity Card is an innate deception which is as automatic to a Sociopath as breathing.

Another common defensive behavior is called Projection.  In simplest form, it's used by Sociopaths this way:  when confronted with potential exposure of their Sociopathy, they project onto their Challenger what they most closely know about themselves:  "He's crazy!"  Or "Just look at what she did to HER husband!"  The object is to release the Sociopath from examination, and divert attention elsewhere.  "The Left wants to take over your government!" say the Nazi Koch Brothers as they spend billions buying Congress and funding fake astroturf Sociopathic Groups like FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity.

Sociopaths are found in groups as small as a family, or as Executive Directors of organizations, all the way up to Supreme Court Justices.  Wherever there is any possibility to assume power over other people, Sociopaths will be found lurking.  A very common place is as an Officer inside State and Local Political Parties, known as the Big-Fish-in-a-Little-Pond syndrome. Becoming a Judge is an automatic career hideout.  It's entirely possible that half the sitting Judges at any point in time are certifiable Sociopaths.

Discovering Sociopathic NAZI disguises in America

There are fewer and fewer of us with a collective memory of America's last Holy War, WWII.  I was born 7 months and 7 days before Pearl Harbor.  I learned WWII from matinee movies at home after school on newfangled b&w TV, where I saw my first political conventions in 1952. In these movies, every American was portrayed as a patriotic hero, supporting the war against psychopathic maniac Adolph Hitler and his Nazi Stormtroopers.

What was never told then, and is barely leaking out now, is that major American elite families financially invested in Hitler's rise to power, in order to position themselves to profit before the war, during the war, and after the war, no matter who won.  It includes one family name well known in particular: Bush.

Descendants of the same families who profited from WWII have profited from every war since. They know that in a time of war, patriotism can be used to focus on the enemy abroad, ignoring the enemy within.  War is Big Business, and when Dwight Eisenhowr warned us to "beware of the military-industrial complex" as he exited his Presidency, he knew this from his direct experience as the Allied Commander in Europe.  Every President dealing with war has had to fight it on two fronts, since at least President Lincoln, who fought to control shoddy war materials sold to his government by Wall Street Corporate war profiteers.
 
General George Washington faced the same corruption from those who saw an opportunity to make profit from war.  It's been allowed to fester and grow since our Nation's founding.  WHAT IF our Revolutionary War had taken the time and had the willpower to execute War Profiteers as traitors to their country?  If that been so, we would not be today supporting a multi-trillion dollar debt from feeding a bloated Corporate Industrial Machine supplying hundreds of military bases all around the Globe.  

America is now in its longest and most costly war ever in Iraq, Pakistan & Afghanistan.  The war was begun by Bush, Chenney & Co. to expand Military-Industrial Corporate profit centers, by 2 Oilmen eager to gain control of massive Iraqi oil fields. War was sold to the American public on the false pretext that these 2 countries collapsed the World Trade Center on 9/11, when the pilots were from our economic and financial ally, oil-rich Saudi Arabia.  The Race to War was softened with the lie that Iraqi Oil would pay for it all, not the American taxpayer.  They promised us a FREE WAR!  And we were dumb enough to believe them.  Oil has paid for nothing.  Not only have we paid with the disintegration of our American towns, roads, and schools– so that our tax dollars can be diverted to build back the towns, roads and schools in Iraq which we destroyed – but so shall generations yet unborn pay for Sociopaths Bush&Chenney's lies.

Once lies which lured America into another War for Profit could not be denied, the search for Osama bin Laden quickly became useful no longer.  The last time Osama was useful was to issue a threat only days before the 2nd election of GwB.  The Fear Vote was just enough to push Bush over the top, so that war profits could proceed full speed ahead.  Osama has been the best ally Sociopaths Bush&Chenney had found.  War is the most reliable device ever discovered to pump unrestricted money directly out of American taxpayers paychecks, and into the pockets of Corporate Fascists, a true and constant Redistribution of Wealth.

Sociopaths resurface as the new NAZIs in 21st Century America

NAZIs successfully rose to political power in Germany during The Great Depression by being Super Nationalistic, promoting the 'natural superiority' of the Aryan race.  The same is true of the growing NAZI movement in America.  Stormtrooper footsoldiers this time are absurdly called the tea party movement, largely made up of disgruntled over-the-hill all-white racist and homophobic losers, filled with anger which FOX Noose actor/propagandists turn into fear, just like Hitler's #2 henchman, Reich Minister of Enlightenment and Propaganda Joseph Goebbels, did in Germany in the 1930s.

One of the first acts of failed writer Goebbels when he became Reich Minister was the burning of books not acceptable to NAZI beliefs. His greatest trick was promoting hatred by turning black into white, twisting lies into truth.  Goebbels perfected the Big Lie technique of propaganda, which is based on the principle that a lie, if audacious enough and repeated enough times, will be believed by the masses.

This has been the guiding principle behind FOX News(sic) fascist leaders, Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes.  Same is true of NAZI Teabaggers, pretending to be the only true patriots in America, when in fact, they are simply dumb shills being used by Corporate Fascists to make themselves wealthier.  And

Eric Cantor Condemns Occupy Wall Street 'Mobs': They're 'Pitting Americans Against Americans'

WASHINGTON - Top House GOP leaders assured attendees at the 2011 Values Voter Summit Friday morning that despite all the attention on fixing the nation's economy, they remain committed to pushing the priorities of social conservatives, including defunding Planned Parenthood and defending the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in court.

Cantor used part of his address to attack the Occupy Wall Street protests, and he condemned political leaders who are supporting them.

"This administration's failed policies have resulted in an assault on many of our nation's bedrock principles," he said. "If you read the newspapers today, I, for one, am increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country. And believe it or not, some in this town, have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans. But you sent us here to fight for you and all Americans."

But when he spoke at the Values Voter Summit in 2009, Cantor expressed a very different sentiment toward another movement that was arguably "pitting Americans against Americans" -- the Tea Party.

At that time, Cantor praised those protesters as "fighting on the fighting lines of what we know is a battle for our democracy.”

"People are beginning to wake up and see a country they don’t really recognize," said Cantor.

At the Washington Ideas Forum on Thursday, Vice President Biden discussed the parallels between the Tea Party and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

"The core is the American people do not think the system is fair or on the level. That is the core of what you're seeing on Wall Street," he said. "There's a lot in common with the Tea Party. The Tea Party started why? TARP. They thought it was unfair, we're bailing out the big guys. What are the people up on the other side of the spectrum saying? The same thing."

In his speech Friday, Cantor also promised the crowd that if Republicans win back the Senate and White House -- and retain control of the House -- in 2012, they will defund Planned Parenthood.

"I can tell you: After November 2012, we look forward to a Senate and a White House that will partner with us to once and for all eliminate government funding for all organizations that perform abortions," said Cantor to loud applause.

Boehner spoke about the House GOP's decision to defend DOMA, which recognizes marriage on the federal level as being between one man and one woman, after Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department would no longer defend the law in federal court.

"If the Justice Department was not going to defend this act passed by Congress, then we will," he said. "We're not only going to defend the law that Congress passed, but we're going to take the money away from the Justice Department that's supposed to [defend the law]."

Defending DOMA will not be cheap. A contract between the House and the private law firm hired to defend the law said that taxpayers will have to fork over $1.5 million. Boehner has not said where the money will come from; while he has consistently insisted he wants the Justice Department to foot the bill, the agency has given no indication it is planning to comply with that request.

"Out of the frying pan, into the fire!"  Palin goes from worse to 'worser' still.

Trying to shoot down the shooters, Sarah is taking potshots at those who point out her long standing pattern of violent rhetoric. Within days of nationwide criticism of her Crosshairs Target Map, she took down offending images and words on her Website without replacing them with an apology.  Instead, she launched an aggressive facebook and web-video campaign to make herself the victim, exactly like Sociopaths do when they feel their identity is being exposed.  She's playing the Pity Card. Sociopaths do not understand how transparent they become once we've caught on to their defense. 

But, she also shot herself in the foot, again, big time.  Totally unaware of the meaning of words she had heard someone use, she claimed she was countering what she deemed to be a "blood libel" against her by the media.

Sarah's ignorant use of this term has defamed the Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish Organizations. Topping that, Sarah thinks our national day of mourning should be all about her.  

"Twenty people shot. Six killed. Fourteen wounded. And guess what? It appears Sarah Palin is the principal victim of the shooting. No, really. Don't believe me?  There she sits, in front of a fireplace and beside an American flag like some cruel joke on Franklin Delano Roosevelt, wreathing herself in pity because people are coming to the conclusion that politicians like her - the ones who have spent the last two years talking about guns and civil war and reloading and such - should bear some of the blame for what happened in Arizona." Read the Article

A few words about NC's infamous Senator NO! 

[Originally written and published 10 July 2008.  Jesse Helms had died 6 days earlier.]

It's polite to wait until they plant the dead in the ground before saying critical things.  Senator Jesse Helms, the greatest embarrassment to North Carolina in modern times, cashed in 6 years after retiring from the US Senate, having been elected to 5 consecutive terms, for 30 years.

Maybe Jesse hung around to watch Democrats divide themselves in the most expensive and wasteful Presidential Primary ever. Maybe he left before America might elect a black President.

Jesse, who cut his teeth working as political advisor for Democrat segregationist US Senator Willis Smith, went on to become the first Republican elected to the US Senate from North Carolina since 1897.

In 2008, NC now had 2 Republicans in the US Senate, from a State which before Jesse had only elected Democrats. How did this happen?  

Since most folks reading this weren't old enough to vote when Jesse was first elected in 1972, perhaps a look back into history is appropriate.  The only elected office Jesse held previously was 2 terms on the Raleigh City Council. And until he was 48 years old, Jesse was a registered Democrat.  He switched parties only two years before being elected as a Republican to the US Senate.

For 11 years I was on campus of NC State University in Raleigh.  Jesse was across Western Boulevard cranking out 5 minute Viewpoint editorials for WRAL-TV.  That's where he endeared himself to eastern NC tobacco farmers and conservative Democrats, ranting against LBJ's Great Society, and anything else those 'Lib-ruls' stood for. We'd tune him in at supper time for a daily chuckle.  He did 2,761 of them.

[ Added note: President Lyndon Johnson was responsible for designing Great Society legislation, including sweeping civil rights laws, Medicare, Medicaid and a War on Poverty.]

I was teaching at Cornell in 1972 when I heard Jesse was running for the US Senate.  For the Senate? This has got to be a joke, I thought. Then some fools down in NC elected this racist, bigoted, homophobic conservative to be a major spokesman for people of my native state.  Again:  How did this happen?

Helms and his supporters formed the National Congressional Club just after he was elected, to retire a $350,000 campaign debt, and to create a Political Machine to keep him in office.  The Club was the first major political organization to reach outside State lines to raise funds from conservatives nationwide.  Their strategy has been imitated by Republicans ever since:  raise piles of money,  hire professional consultants,  and create attack ads.

They elected conservatives by pumping these ads into living rooms across the nation, just like Jesse's editorials flowed in constantly. They built a strong political base at the grassroots level, and it worked.  Though Jesse produced almost no bills that passed Senate approval, North Carolina voters elected him again and again.  For 30 years.  

Jesse became known as Senator No, feared for his use of Senate Rules to derail Bills and block initiatives. For a minority party, his blatant, inflammatory obstructionism was very useful.

Still, this isn't what did the trick for him. With a small number of registered Republicans in NC and an ineffective State GOP, it was only votes of Democrats that elected Jesse. Dissident conservative and moderate Democrats were pushed out of their Party, and found that they were welcomed with open arms into Jesse's party.

It happened for 30 years.  And it's still going on today.  The reason NC has gone Red for decades, is not because the GOP is smarter.  It's because the Democratic leadership is dumber.  Bush won 56% of the vote in NC in both 2000 and 2004. 

(Update 10/26/09: Obama won NC's 15 electoral votes only by a 14,177 plurality out of over 2.4 million votes cast for President.  The Obama Campaign spent millions on visits, TV advertising and opening 50 offices in NC's 100 counties.  Democratic Party State Chair Jerry Meek, with local Party Officers in each county, could not be counted on by Obama to deliver the votes needed to win.)

Nowhere was this failure in Leadership more evident than in the lead up to 2008 Presidential Primary Elections. Republicans settled on one candidate early on.  Job done, little money spent.  Democrats bloodied themselves to a pulp in public, flushing all the money they could raise down the drain as fast as they were able.

Democrats look at Republican successes, but seldom learn anything from them.  The theory NC Democrats have is this: if it didn't work last time, what we need is more of it next time.  The same failed Leadership is at work to return Republican Richard Burr to the US Senate in 2010. 

(Update 11/2/10: After her financial resources were depleted by a DSCC backed unknown lawyer – caused by forcing a pointless Runoff – NC Secretary of State Elaine Marshall lost her bid for the US Senate to Burr.)

(Update 1/29/11:  After 2 more failed years under Blue Dog NCDP State Party Chair David Young, who followed Meek's 4 misdirected years, finally the 6-year cycle of failure was broken when DNC Delegate David Parker was elected as Democratic Party State Chair to lead his Party to the 2012 re-election of President Obama.  Three days later, Michelle Obama announced that Charlotte NC had been selected as the site for the 2012 Democratic National Convention.  Read more here:
